Featured Artist of the Month       Roger Jackson

This month's featured artist is Roger Jackson.  Roger and his wife Mary live in rural Derby, Iowa and have three grown children, a daughter, Heather and two sons, Brian and Kevin.  Roger's one of a kind pieces are a highlight of the Gallery.

Roger's work is showcased not only in the Grassroots Gallery & Cafe but his work also houses other artists work.  Roger has been woodworking since 1975 and has owned his own business since 1985.

Roger's work includes items that range from large handcrafted furniture, to small, delicate pieces. Roger has built cabinets, china hutches, keepsake boxes and many more quality items.  His current projects include caskets and urns and he is often commissioned to create one of a kind, special pieces for his clients.

Roger logs his own wood, all native to Iowa, typically including Oak, Walnut and Cherry.  He then cuts the logs at his own saw mill and dries the wood for up to a year before moving it in to solar kilns, an environmentally friendly way of further drying the wood.  After 6 weeks, the wood will be ready to become a beautiful work of art in Roger's hands.

"I work seven days a week, often until midnight or 1 am and it's hard work, projects can take weeks or months, depending on if someone comes to me with an idea already in mind, or if we develop the piece together before it is created.  I find the work very satisfying, and often work on multiple projects at once."

Roger's beautiful woodworking is both intricate and unique.  His one of a kind pieces are admired for their quality, beauty and fine craftsmanship.  His advice to other's?

"It's a big responsibility to own your own business, but I always remember that while I own my business, my customer's come first, they're my boss."

The Grassroots Gallery & Cafe is pleased to show Roger's work.

If you have questions for Roger, he can be contacted through the Grassroots Gallery & Cafe or by phone at 641.533.2713.
